Quick Stats: 6.0 Miles & 1,572′ gain via East Ridge from Mount Disappointment Road. HPS #59
Not the most exciting adventure I’ve been on, but Mount Deception is a listed peak that I never bagged when I went peakbagging in the local area months ago with Sarah.
You start off at Eaton Saddle, take the trail in the Markham Saddle where you hook right to the San Gabriel Peak Trail. At the fork between Mount Disappointment and San Gabriel Peak, head toward Mount Disappointment, and then hike on the maintained service road down a bit. You’ll head West, then switch back and head East, before switching back and heading West again for a while, and then when the road starts to curve North, there’s a very easy to miss start to the Mount Deception Trail. Follow this up, and then you get to a not very exciting summit.
I retraced my steps and then decided to hit San Gabriel Peak while I was there because I didn’t feel like I was done hiking yet.
All in all a nice brisk morning spent in the San Gabriel Mountains!
